Generally speaking about this application, it gives the possibility to book a travel. This includes the steps: define transports, hotels, type of rooms, insert the prices. We have much more information stored in (for example: routes for a transport, resorts for a specific city, and types of room associated with a certain hotel etc).

When making a booking, all the afferent steps are made: choose a customer, insert passengers, issue the ticket, print the ticket, etc. The payments are made using imported files from the bank and also manually. We also have the possibility to cancel a booking - with all the afferent steps.

The application is very complex, made to be used by several companies, each company having several agencies. Also we have different type of users, each of them having specific rights.

Development

The HBS was developed using Microsoft's newest version of its server-side scripting language ASP.NET with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 as a database server. This capable and at the same time affordable relational DBMS (RDBMS) provides high-level security of the data stored and high-speed access to the information.

ASP.NET is Microsoft's latest edition of its ASP (Active Server Pages) technology for building dynamic, server-side applications. Part of the Microsoft .NET platform for developing web services and applications, ASP.NET is a server-side technology that runs on an application server working in conjunction with a web server.

There are many advantages to using ASP.NET:

• Security is enhanced due to the fact that the ASP.NET server-side code is not exposed to the browser and Windows authentication is built in.
• ASP.NET code is processed on the server, so browser dependency is not an issue.
• ASP.NET is basically language independent, so in addition to allowing existing programming skills to be utilized, the common language runtime allows interoperability with existing development.
• Its performance is better. ASP.NET is compiled common language runtime code running on the server. Performance is greatly improved over previous Web development models that are interpreted on the server.

• Create next-generation interfaces with reusable AJAX components.
• Enhance existing pages using powerful AJAX controls with support for all modern browsers.
• Access remote services and data from the browser without tons of complicated script.
• Take advantage of the improved efficiency and ease of use in Visual Studio 2008, with its built-in support for ASP.NET AJAX, improved JavaScript support, and a new Web age designer interface.
