We analyzed over 1,000 online stores in Romania built on the Magento platform. The results highlight a lack of technological updates, major security vulnerabilities, and a slow adoption of best practices in eCommerce.
Key findings:
- 15% of the stores still run on Magento 1, a platform officially discontinued by Adobe in 2020 – with no technical support or security patches.
- 5% of Magento 2 websites operate on very outdated versions, and 1.3% use obsolete versions of ElasticSearch.
- 17.2% publicly expose the Magento version they use, and 24.1% keep the default admin URL (/admin) – a common vulnerability exploited in brute-force attacks.
- Only 1.5% of stores migrated from Magento in the last year, most of them switching to WordPress or Shopify.
- Just 4.5% use the modern Hyvä theme, the fastest and most performant Magento front-end technology. Less than 1% use Magento Enterprise, the dedicated solution for large businesses.
- Only 32.5% publicly display their company’s legal details on their website.
Other relevant insights:
- 89.5% of websites use .ro domains.
- 78% were developed by only seven software providers.
- Social media links displayed on websites: Facebook (57%), Instagram (38%), LinkedIn (10%), TikTok (5%).
- 2% of websites include a dedicated B2B subdomain.
Methodology:
The analysis was conducted by parsing public pages (homepage, contact, terms and conditions, admin URLs, etc.) without using invasive tools or black-hat techniques.
